Photocatalytic Degradation of Herbicides at Titanium(IV) Oxide Modified with Metal Salts and Oxides

The doctoral thesis was focused on environmental problems related to contamination of water with herbicides: 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. One of the most promising methods for water purification is heterogeneous photocatalysis. In this work a wide library of photocatalysts based on titanium(IV) oxide was synthetized. They were modified with different amounts (0.01-0.50%mol metal:Ti) of salts and oxides of following metals: Fe, Co, Ga, Bi, W, Mo, V and Ni. The materials were calcined at three chosen temperatures and characterised structurally and spectroscopically with XRD, UV-vis/DRS and photocurrent measurements. Their photocatalytic activity was investigated in the processes of terephthalic acid oxidation and herbicides and azure B degradation. Based on these studies the most favourable synthesis parameters were proposed: small modifier content and middle chosen calcination temperature, which result in both anatase and rutile presence in the final material. The most significant conclusion stated in this work is confirmation of indirect influence of modifiers on the photocatalytic activity of the materials. The role of modifiers is mostly observed during the photocatalyst synthesis – they influence the anatase to rutile ratio, being the main factor determining the overall photocatalytic activity of TiO2. Therefore, such modifiers are regarded as TiO2-synthesis-steering factors.

Conference

IV International Conference Oxygenalia 2018

Two members of our group have attended the IV International Conference Oxygenalia 2018 in Vilnius (11-13 October 2018) where prof. Wojciech Macyk has given a lecture entitled „Metal oxides in photocatalysis – opportunities and limitations” and Magdalena Mikrut presented poster “Particulate matter from Kraków versus standardized air pollution: physicochemical analysis, HO˙ and singlet oxygen photo-generation”.

Award

On November 8 this year in the hall of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Jagiellonian University, the 15th anniversary of CITTRU was held. During the meeting prizes were awarded for constant, long-term cooperation with business partners bringing continuous and highest revenues in the JU for the provision of commercial research and expert services. The awards for commercialization of research results were given to prof. Wojciech Macyk with his team (Dr. Rafał Sadowski and Dr. Przemysław Łabuz).

The members of our research team took part in the training session “The latest technological solutions for analytical chemistry” was organized by shim-pol.

Award

OPUS project granted

Prof. Sebastian Maćkowski, prof. Joanna Niedziółka-Jönsson and prof. Wojciech Macyk  obtained a grant from National Science Centre within OPUS 12 programme. The project “Remotely light-controlled activity of dyes, proteins and catalysts: imaging, sensing and energy conversion” is intended to show that the energy of photons illuminating a nanowire can be transported to its other end, and that this energy is capable to activate and deactivate nanostructures, which are important from the point of view of imaging, sensorics or energy conversion.

Congratulations!

Award

SONATA project granted

Dr. Joanna Kuncewicz obtained a grant from National Science Centre within SONATA 13 programme. The project goal and title are “Studies on the interaction of semiconductors with metal-organic frameworks (MOF) and its influence on photoinduced processes”.
